When I joined FourFront a few months ago, I didn’t know that planning our annual volunteer event would be part of my job. I had never done this sort of thing before. Plus, I was more than a little intimidated by the sheer number of worthy causes and organizations located in Philadelphia. How was I going to pick just one? Luckily, I’m surrounded by an amazing team of researchers and analysts, who inspired me to base my decision on data.
And here are some of the numbers that led me to choose Philabundance:
Approximately 325,000 Philadelphia citizens exist below the poverty line and face some form of food insecurity. This equates to one in five people. To visualize this, picture Lincoln Financial Field, packed to capacity, five times over.
Philabundance has over 30 years of experience in charitable food distribution. They also have volunteer opportunities that are designed to accommodate small teams like ours (16).
So, on Wednesday, August 22, we spent the afternoon with this amazing organization, helping them run a food line that prepped, sorted, and packaged a total of 613 food boxes for community distribution. Our team (pictured below) was very proud of this number, although I’m sure their competitive selves will want to return for a shot at the record of 1,200+.
For my part, I’m incredibly grateful for the whole experience. In fact, I don’t think I’d ever want to work for a company that misses the opportunity to bring its team together while giving back to the community.
